    Forum Description

Since the military coup that occurred on July 15, 2016, President of Turkey, Erdogan has taken extreme measures in crushing all opposition and catalysts related to the parallel state – including universities and medical institutions in Turkey. Over 40 medical schools have dissolved overnight in Turkey, with medical students’ future in shrouded in uncertainty. Some of these medical schools were private or foundational schools, including Ipek University, Izmir University, Turgut Ozal University, and Sifa University, however, they were labeled as being affiliated with the Gulen movement. However, students from medical schools that have closed may be transferred to other medical schools in order to complete their education. Their degree will be given from the new institution. Hospitals at full capacity  Even though students may be transferred to new medical schools, Erdogan also shut down 35 hospitals/health services since July 2016. Due to the surge in increased transfer students and the closing of hospitals, medical schools will now be functioning at over capacity with under-staffed faculty.  Students who wish to participate in clinical rotations at hospitals may succumb to the burden of the healthcare system due to Erdogan’s decision to close healthcare facilities and medical institutions. The refugee factor With the rise of a refugee population in Turkey only makes matters worse in regarding the struggling healthcare system. Refugees are struggling to have proper healthcare in both the rural and urban areas in Turkey, and due to the large population of undocumented refugees, this is a massive burden to the healthcare system. Hopefully, those medical students in Turkey who were affected by the closure of medical schools will find a solution to deal with the transition. References:
