For example, AMCAS (application service to US medical schools) recommends having a rec letter from a lab professor to show your lab experience. So expect 3 recs:
1. Lab professor that demonstrates your lab experience
2. Basic sciences professor (bio, chem, etc)
3. Any clinical experience you had (shadowing a doctor or something)
